How Restorative Dentistry Saves Your Teeth

Regardless of how well you take care of your teeth, you will probably need some restorative dentistry procedure at some point in your life. Despite the fact teeth are the strongest part of the human body, there are many things that can end up damaging them like trauma to the mouth as a result of an accident or playing a contact sport. Teeth can also be damaged by acids that are made by oral bacteria. Thanks to restorative dentistry, it is now possible to restore a person's smile regardless of any dental issues they have had in the past.

Popular treatments used in restorative dentistry

1. Dental crowns

Crowns are one of the handiest prosthetics used by dentists. Also called caps, these devices are so versatile they can be used for restorative or cosmetic purposes. A crown looks just like a real tooth and it fits right on top of it, covering the entire part of the tooth that rests above the gumline. It completely seals the tooth it is covering from all the things in the mouth like bacteria, saliva or food particles.

Crowns are often used to fix chipped, broken, fractured or badly-decayed teeth. The crown allows the wearer to regain the function of the damaged tooth while protecting it from further damage and restoring its appearance. Crowns can be made from a wide range of materials like gold, silver, porcelain and ceramics.

2. Fillings

Fillings are one of the most economical treatments used by restorative dentists. It is a safe and effective way to stop tooth decay in its tracks. When the structure of a tooth is being eaten away by decay, tiny holes called cavities begin to develop on the tooth. These holes gradually expand, weakening the tooth in the process. The expansion continues until the cavity causes the tooth to break or it reaches the pulp chamber where the tooth's nerve and pulp are.

A filling is a putty-like material that is inserted into the cavity to seal it back up. It stops it from expanding further and it prevents food particles and acids from reaching the inner parts of the tooth.

3. Root canal

A root canal is the last line of defense against tooth decay. This procedure is performed to save a tooth when tooth decay has reached its pulp chamber or it has become infected. During the procedure, the dentist removes the content of the pulp chamber with a series of files and medication is applied to the area. The hole is then sealed using a rubbery material. In most cases, the dentist will then install a crown to protect the newly-restored tooth.

4. Implants

Implants are arguably the best alternative when it comes to replacing missing teeth. The device replaces the tooth's root and a crown is fitted on it to replace the tooth. Thanks to restorative dentists, there is no need to settle with damaged teeth that have lost their function. Talk to one of our dentists to find out how your teeth can be restored.
