Guide to the All-on-4® Procedures

All-on-4® dental implants are one of the commonly recommended alternatives to regular dentures. The dental restoration is one of the popular options available, allowing dentists to replace an entire arch of teeth with only four dental implants – and more interestingly, in a single day. Many people choose this option for replacing missing teeth. If you are due for the All-on-4® device, this article talks about the process involved.

How All-on-4® works

Although the All-on-4® procedure itself can be completed in a day, the entire process often requires multiple appointments. First, the final teeth prosthetic has to be fabricated and examined for appearance, feel, and bite. Also, the dentist needs to perform a dental examination to ensure that the procedure will be performed on an appropriate candidate and that there is no compromise in quality.

The process to get All-on-4® implant restoration starts with an initial consultation. Usually, this may include a CT scan, an oral examination, and a discussion covering the benefits, drawbacks, and alternatives. The scan is to determine the condition of the jawbone and evaluate bone loss and to view the entire structure of the oral cavity.

Candidates deemed eligible for the procedure will have impressions of their lower or upper jaw taken by the dentist. With the impressions, the dentist will be able to create the denture. The denture is the teeth prosthesis that goes over the inserted dental implants.

During the procedure

On the day of the implant placement, the dentist will prepare the patient for the surgery with full instructions. After the procedure starts, the dentist will remove any existing damaged teeth on the jaw, including infected soft or hard tissues. After this, the implants can be inserted.

Two of the dental implants will go into the front section of the lower jaw. The dentist will insert the last two at a 45-degree angle at the back of the jaw. The implants require a strategic placement to ensure the success of the procedure. After the surgery, patients will get a full set of teeth for use. After recovery, involving strong bonding between the implants and the jawbone, the dentist will provide the final dental restoration, which will be examined for the bite, comfort, and good fit.

Follow-up care

After the All-on-4® procedure, patients need to care properly for their new implants. This means following proper oral hygiene, consuming a diet of soft foods, and avoiding smoking, drinking, heavy exercise, and contact sports – all of which can affect how the implants integrate with the jawbone and compromise success.

Pain may occur after surgery; for this, the dentist may prescribe pain relievers and antibiotics to help with the discomfort. As the jaw heals over the following weeks, it will bond with the implants, and patients can return to regular diet and routine.

In conclusion

When researching tooth replacement options, it is important to consider the opinions of a professional dentist. If you are eligible for the All-on-4® procedure, the dentist will provide additional information on what to expect. Remember, not all patients are alike.
