When it comes to using dental veneers to improve the smile’s appearance, people tend to focus on their top front teeth more. However, both the top and bottom teeth are visible when smiling and both can contribute to one's entire smile. The dentist can efficiently place dental veneers over the top and bottom teeth. They are a durable method of hiding dental imperfections.
Dental veneer placement
To complete a dental veneer procedure, at least two appointments with the dentist will be necessary. The following is what one can expect during veneer placement.
Tooth preparation, impressions and shades
Dental veneers only need minimal removal of the tooth’s enamel. The preparation process will depend on the type of veneer to use (whether porcelain or composite), the position of the teeth and the dentist’s techniques. A local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort. A handheld dental tool is used to contour the tooth’s surface.
After preparing the tooth, the dental professional will take impressions of the prepared tooth, as well as the bite alignment. A shade that closely matches that of the natural teeth that will produce an attractive and perfect smile. The shade and impressions are sent to the dental laboratory that will fabricate the veneers.
Temporary veneers
The dentist will create temporary veneers from acrylic material and cement them over the teeth using temporary cement. The temporary veneers are not so strong as the final set but they will protect the teeth from sensitivity. The patient must avoid biting or chewing hard foods and objects and maintain good oral hygiene habits.
The permanent veneers
The permanent dental veneers will be ready after a week or two. The dentist will place them over the teeth first to check if they fit well or need further adjustments. When satisfied, they will proceed to bond the dental veneers permanently.
The teeth will be cleaned first and an etching solution will be applied to roughen the surfaces microscopically. This is necessary to improve the bond of the veneer to the tooth. The teeth may be prone to sensitivity, so a local anesthetic may be applied to ease the pain.
The cement is applied to the back of the veneer and placed over the tooth. The dentist may use a curing light to harden the cement. Then, they will clean off any excess cement from the tooth’s surface. The teeth’s bite and alignment will be examined to ensure everything is in order.
Caring for dental veneers
Although dental veneers are strong, they still need maintenance like natural teeth. Patients should try not to break hard items with their teeth or chew on hard foods. Unlike the natural enamel, veneers are more resistant to stains, but they cannot be whitening with bleaching agents. With adequate care, veneers can survive regular use for more than ten years.
